I need help on math. How can I attend tutoring?
Just walk in! We tutor in Room 45 at Sunny Hills High School Monday through Thursday from 3:30pm - 4 pm. We do not require students to sign up, so feel free to walk in. A club officer or Dr. Cheng will greet you, ask for your math level, and then pair you with a tutor. Then you take out your questions and ask away! Who can receive tutoring? All Sunny Hills students taking any of the following classes can come to receive help:
What does a typical tutoring session look like? Our goal is to be able to answer all of our walk-in students' questions. Our tutors can teach one-on-one for individual, personalized learning OR in pairs and small groups. It all depends on what the student feels most comfortable with. Since we have a good number of tutors attending each day, most students work with a peer tutor one-on-one. Sometimes a few students in the same math class want to be tutored together and so work as a small group with one tutor. How many students attend tutoring each day? It depends on the day and the week! During the 2022-23 school year, we averaged 10 walk-in students and 11 tutors per day. Some days we had more and some days we had less. How many peer tutors are there in total? We are starting off the 2023-24 school year with 60 peer tutors! I received tutoring recently at the Algebra Center and would like to provide feedback. How can I go about doing this? Thanks for coming in! Please complete our student feedback Google Form https://forms.gle/ae8AjsFF5hdpP2YV7 and let us know how we're doing! I'm a parent of a Sunny Hills student and would like him to attend tutoring. Is there a way for me to verify that he attended? Yes, no problem! Please email our advisor, Dr. Cheng ([email protected]). We have our daily student attendance lists readily available and can confirm the days your student attended tutoring. What are the behavioral expectations for students? We would like to welcome all students who seek help understanding math concepts. However, walk-in students who do not follow common sense behavior expectations at an afterschool tutoring organization - attend only when they genuinely need and want to receive help on math, wait to be seated/paired with a tutor, put earbuds/phone away before entering the room, seek to understand math concepts rather than to obtain homework answers from tutors, leave at or before closing time, follow directions given by the Algebra Center advisor/school staff members - will not be invited back to our peer tutoring club. We are a service organization, helping fellow students for FREE. Please respect our club and all the work our advisor, cabinet members, and tutors do each day to keep it going. I'm an advanced math student and want to help others with their math. How can I become an Algebra Center tutor? We recruit new tutors at the beginning of the school year, in August. Prospective tutors must have earned high marks in Algebra 2/Honors AND be enrolled in Precalculus or above. All of our tutors are currently enrolled in Honors Precalculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Statistics, or IB Math. Tutors must commit to serve 30 minutes once a week, tutoring any student who walks in needing math help. If you meet these minimum requirements and would like to apply, see our "Become a Tutor" page for the application link. What is the story behind the creation of the Algebra Center? Our advisor started the Algebra Center because she loved tutoring her students at lunch and after school but found it difficult to give the one-on-one attention needed to really help struggling students improve in math. She knew that advanced math students at Sunny Hills would be able to serve as peer tutors and that having them available at an inviting, centralized location each day would make it convenient for all students on campus to stop in and get math help. The Accolade (SHHS student newspaper) published this article shortly after we began tutoring September 1, 2021. |
No sign up neededMath can be stressful and difficult, but we will help make it fun and easy to understand. Just walk in after school; no sign up necessary.
